Examining your Bee

Learn how to conduct a full hive exam, how to identify the different castes of the Honey bee, and how to spot and mark your queen! You will learn how to identify the various life stages of the Honey bee and how to spot brood disease in your bee hives. We will discuss the importance of record keeping and registering your Apiary. This class is suitable for beekeepers with little or no experience or those looking for a refresher course.

Making Splits and Nucs

Learn when and how to make a split from your existing hives. Several methods will be discussed and practised. You will learn how to create a nuc with or without a new queen available and how to successfully make splits in your own beeyard. This class is suitable for new beekeepers and those with some experience maintaining hives.

Class size will be small to facilitate lots of open discussion and maximize time in the hives for everyone. The classes will be held at 6328 264 Street, Aldergrove.

Please bring your CLEAN protective gear, if you have some. I have a selection of bee suits and veils available for purchase here if you don’t already have one. I will supply you with a hive tool and smoker for your use while you are here but if you want to practice lighting your own smoker you may also bring this item. Please wear appropriate clothes and footwear, we will be outside rain or shine. You will be working hands-on in the hives and you will get dirty.

You can bring a notepad and pen, but the objective will be to have your hands in the hives; I will have handouts that you can review online using Dropbox and download for your own use. For each class you should bring your own chair if you may wish to sit for part of the class. We will provide snacks and water throughout the class.
